Strengthening your Inner Scientist

A Paediatric Speech Pathologist’s Guide to Engaging with Evidence

  • Starts 14 July
  • 399 Australian dollars

Workshop description

We all know we’re meant to be evidence-based practitioners, but for most speech pathologists, the sciencey side of that EBP triangle is a bit, well, scary. It’s been a long time since stats at university, and getting your hands on a research paper is hard enough, let alone reading it, figuring out whether it’s any good, and working out how to apply it with your clients. Guess what? You’re not alone. We field a lot of questions from amazing, experienced speech pathologists like: - How can I find evidence that’s actually useful? - How can I tell whether the paper I’ve read is a good paper? - Do I need to copy the methods of this article exactly to get results with my clients? Most speech pathologists aren’t researchers, and that’s a good thing! Most of us need to be on the ground, helping individual kids; but we also need to be engaging with the science in our field, so we can provide the best-practice management our clients deserve. So, what we really need to know is how to *consume* research, not how to do research. In this online workshop, we’ll spend four sessions talking about the steps needed to integrate scientific evidence into your practice: - Session 1 (2 hours): Ask and Acquire. How to ask the right questions, search, and get the evidence once you’ve found it. Sounds simple but… it’s not! - Session 2 (2 hours): Appraise. How to read and evaluate scientific evidence. We’ll also address the elephant in the room: how to evaluate information from other sources, like social media. - Session 3 (2 hours): Apply. How to bridge the gap between reading a paper and using that information to help your clients, including how to integrate all three sides of the EBP triangle. - Session 4 (1 hour): Audit. A small group session, where you will discuss your findings and ask questions. In between sessions, you’ll practise your new skills; so you'll finish the course with evidence specific to that kid or caseload issue that’s been keeping you up at night. Whether you work with babies or adolescents, you'll leave with a stronger inner scientist who can help you navigate your thorniest clinical dilemmas. Places are limited for this small workshop, so sign up now to avoid missing a spot! NB: - This workshop will run over four fortnightly sessions, starting July 14th, 2022. - Sessions 1-3 will be 9am-11am; then session 4 will be a 1-hour session between 8am and noon. - Times/dates as in Melbourne, Australia (AEST/AEDT), cost in AUD - No CEUs available
